Frederique Pisuisse
Artist and DJ Frederique Pisuisse (she/they) questions conventional understandings of the body and the mind and consciousness-expanding practices such as psychedelics and meditation through film, poetry and music. Their work follows a dissociative logic that explores its creative potential, and gives voice to the experience of otherness and how to live with this.

I’m Just Lying There (2022)
Film 19’46

I’m Just Lying There (2022) is a ficto-memoir about a relationship between a young teenage girl and a 36 year old man. Through poems and pop songs, the film brings back memories of their weirdly grown-up dates. Having dinner at a restaurant for the first time without parents, and being picked up in his Mercedes to get high together.
The coming-of-age film looks at the shaping experiences in which the female body is first subjected to the male gaze, becoming an object of desire. The protagonist, who is 13 years old at the time of their relationship, is pulled towards the sensual experiences of being with this man, and simultaneously feels the danger in these experiences. There is a sense of dissolution of the self. She uses her intellect to separate and watch over the body she owns, a detachment strategy, whereby the scene appears to the viewer in birds-eye-view. Time is warped and the body is stretched, creating a body-mind separation experienced while watching.
I'm Just Lying There is distributed, preserved and archived by LI-MA and was shown at Rewire Festival at iii in Amare the Hague, West den Haag, Set Project Space London, WYSIWYG Cinema the Hague, Lab111 Amsterdam, Spielraum at De School Amsterdam and at LungA Festival in Iceland, Het Einde De School Amsterdam.

Tripsitter (2020)
Film 12’25

Tripsitter (2020) is a personal journey through various consciousness-expanding moments experienced during and after a traumatic trip with the hallucinatory drug DMT. Guided by an extensive poem, the viewer is taken through a scale model of a nondescript building and parking lot, personifying the dark corners of the human mind. While the camera wanders through the model, you see shadows glide over the tranquil landscape, the rhythm of the four seasons while ravens drift in the sky.
Through Ayahuasca ceremonies, meditation retreats, panic attacks and Out of Body Experiences, the diary-like text gives the viewer insight into the recovery process after the development of a derealization disorder of the artist. Derealization is a dissociative disorder in which people get the feeling that the world is not real, and through which the outside world looks like a movie or a film set.
Tripsitter was produced for Gh0stSpace London and shown at International Film Festival Rotterdam, Video Art Festival Turku in Finland, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Roffa Mon Amour Film Festival Rotterdam, Pinkman Records Acid Surfers Day Festival Rotterdam, Home Cinema at Reneenee Amsterdam and Lemoyne Gallery Zurich. The film is distributed by LI-MA and was taken into their archive for research and preservation.
