		<description>Sexually Abused Artists Collective

	EN NL

	SAAC is an art collective based in Amsterdam, consisting of both emerging and established artists, including painters, filmmakers, illustrators, performers, writers, and photographers, whose lives have been affected by the consequences of sexual abuse under the age of eighteen. The collective's work revolves around exploring the aftermath of sexual abuse through the practice of art.
Brought together in September 2021 by Jan Hoek, SAAC operates under a non-hierarchical model, ensuring that artistic decisions are reached through mutual agreement. This ensures that every member has a voice, and no one is required to do anything they feel uncomfortable with or are not ready for.

Several members of the collective discovered that their work was linked to themes of sexual abuse and power dynamics prior to joining the group. For others, joining SAAC provided new understanding of how deeply these issues are woven into the fabric of society, and how profoundly sexual abuse shapes personal narratives and perspectives. Through art, the collective strives to amplify the voices of survivors of sexual abuse, challenging societal taboos and the stigma often attached to their experiences. In doing so, SAAC serves as a platform where the complex nuances of abuse can find resonance and empathy.

The collective is currently working on exhibitions, publications, and community outreach initiatives. SAAC aims to initiate a powerful movement for support, healing, understanding, and social change, which is already taking place within the dynamics of the group. By supporting SAAC, you contribute to a vital and innovative movement to end sexual abuse and create a safer, more empathetic society for everyone.

SAAC is more than just an art collective; it is a community of survivors who understand the impact of sexual abuse and advocate for the continuous process of healing. While the collective is not a therapy group, the environment provided within SAAC can be therapeutic for its members. Through shared experiences, it creates a safe space where individuals can express themselves and their emotions without judgment. The group enables members to connect with others who have had similar experiences, offering a rare sense of empathy and belonging that might be hard to find elsewhere.

		<description>Sexually Abused Artists Collective

	EN NL

	SAAC is een kunstcollectief gevestigd in Amsterdam, bestaande uit startende en ervaren kunstenaars, waaronder schilders, filmmakers, illustratoren, performers, schrijvers en fotografen, wier levens beïnvloed zijn door de gevolgen van seksueel misbruik in de jeugd.
Het werk van het collectief draait om het verkennen van de nasleep van seksueel misbruik door het maken van kunst.&#38;nbsp;

Read more about the workshops below and register via this link.
Note that workshops are mainly in Dutch, contact the museum if you are English speaking and want to particiapte.

Levi Jacobs - Mixed media workshop for adultsSunday 16 MarchDuring the workshop, you will visually investigate how an event from the past has shaped you in the present. You will use different materials for this.You choose an event (positive or negative, whatever you want) that you remember from your past, and investigate how it still influences or shapes you today.The theme is your own childhood memory and may tie in with that of the exhibition (sexual abuse), but that is not necessary.&#38;nbsp;People can bring a photo or object symbolising the memory for inspiration, which will be taken home intact afterwards.&#38;nbsp;Should someone not be able to find or think of anything, that is no problem.Rebecca Simons - Collage Workshop for adultsSunday 30 MarchIn the workshop, participants experiment with creative collage using personal archive material. Participants will be given creative tools by Rebecca to edit personal images and documents. Letter writing can also play a role in the workshop. In this workshop, participants can reposition themselves to memories and take back control by adapting their history to their own preferences.&#38;nbsp;

Participants bring a photograph (digital or print) that represents a person, place or location that has impacted their lives. The theme of this can be sexual abuse, but it can also be something else, positive or negative.Alma Mathijsen - Writing and drawing workshop for adultsSunday 13 AprilDuring the workshop, participants will learn to put memories on paper. Everyone has a story that wants to be told. Often people struggle to start and to give it proper structure. Alma teaches you how to ignore your inner critic and write with some distance, for instance by writing from the perspective of an object. At the end of the workshop, you will have been given tools to come up with a story, making small drawings that give some air and life to the stories.
The theme of your story can tie in with the exhibition, but it doesn't have to.Valentijn Hoogenkamp - Workshop Visual poetry for adultsSunday 11 MayIn the workshop, we will combine language and images to create a visual poem. A visual poem (or visual poem) is a poem in which language and images are used in equal measure to express an experience or a feeling. In this way, something can be expressed that is difficult to capture in language or images alone. During the workshop, you will learn which phrases or images weaken or strengthen the expressed experience. The materials paint, pencil and ink are combined. In the workshop we do writing exercises on style and rhythm and painting and drawing exercises. We will create two proofs of poems and finally one image poem.This workshop ties in with the theme of the exhibition: childhood sexual abuse.

Museum Het Nieuwe Domein presents work by 15 members of the Sexually Abused Artists Collective -SAAC- from Amsterdam. This is the first time we exhibited as a group.In 2021, Jan Hoek initiated SAAC, which consists of starting and experienced artists, including painters, filmmakers, illustrators, performers, writers and photographers. The members of the collective are all living with the consequences of sexual abuse before the age of 18. The work of many members of the collective was already connected to sexual abuse and power dynamics before they joined the group. For others, joining SAAC provided new insights about the deep interconnectedness of this experience with their lives in society. They experienced a growing awareness about how impactful sexual abuse can be in shaping one's ‘doings’ and worldview.Through art, SAAC gives a voice to the complexity of abuse experiences and makes societal stigma and shame around it visible and discussable.More than just an art collective, SAAC is a community that understands the impact of sexual abuse and supports the ongoing process of healing. While the collective is not a therapy group, the environment it provides can be very healing. The shared experiences create a safe space for individuals to express themselves and their feelings without judgement. The group allows members to connect with others who have had similar experiences and offers a sense of understanding and connection that can be hard to find elsewhere.As a visitor, a presentation of diverse work awaits you that can be confronting but also carries a certain lightness. In doing so, the exhibition reflects the character of the collective: diverse, warm, chaotic, open and understanding. Each member has their own story and lives in their own world, yet is connected to the collective.The New Domain aims to put socially relevant issues on the agenda. Sexual violence affects many more people than we think: 1 in 3 people come into contact with it. Abuse cuts deep into the lives of everyone involved.SAAC draws attention to this complex subject through artistic imagination. The New Domain is happy to provide a stage for this.Participating artists: Josefina Di Cesare, FBVG, Mieke Hessels, Jan Hoek, Valentijn Hoogenkamp, Levi Jacobs, Ankie van Kasteren, L., Ted van Lieshout, Sanna Martha, Alma Mathijsen, Mandy Nijhof, Ronald Ophuis, Papa Oyeyemi, Frederique Pisuisse and Rebecca Simons.

 Sexual violence in the queer community26 November 2024&#60;img width="1440" height="1440" width_o="1440" height_o="1440" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7db91281637e59379d2c670c054c225025c8ae869b0285822df07c6a077d1714/SAAC-event.jpg" data-mid="221586648" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7db91281637e59379d2c670c054c225025c8ae869b0285822df07c6a077d1714/SAAC-event.jpg" /&#62;
People in the queer community face significantly more sexual violence than those outside of it. Why is that? And what can we do about it? During this evening, which is part of a series of safety conferences organized by the Queer365 alliance, we will dive into this topic and search for solutions. Amsterdam should be, and remain, a city of sexual freedom and experimentation for queers, and for that reason, we must stand up against all forms of sexual violence and boundary-crossing behavior!
Therefore, we will discuss the following topics: How do we deal with consent in places of sexual freedom? Why are queers more often sexually abused, even as children? How can we ensure queers are able to report sexual abuse more effectively? How can Amsterdam better protect queer refugees from boundary-crossing behavior? And why do we never hear anything about sexual abuse in the lesbian scene?
We will be talking to Levi Jacobs (Sexual Abused Artists Collective), Ira Kip, Mani Nezami, Michael O’Dea (Menaswell), Anne Rodermond (Club Church), and we will have a performance by Didi Kruike. The evening will be hosted by Jan Hoek and Valentijn Hoogenkamp.Date: Tuesday 26 November

Alma Mathijsen

	Alma Mathijsen (1984) wrote five novels, a novella and a collection of short stories. Her work has been translated in several languages, and has been nominated for the BNG Bank Literatuurprijs and the Libris Literatuurprijs. Her latest book Onderland deals with the imaginary world that children construct after they have suffered sexual assault.︎︎︎Alma’s website
︎︎︎You can read an extract from Alma’s novel Forget the girls here.
‘’It is a relief to come together with artists who have the same background and to see how they translate their trauma into new wonderful works. ‘’

All the members of SAAC have created a innerworld for themselves in which they can hide when the world becomes too hard. I became mesmerized by these beautifully constructed thought up places and decided that I wanted to write a novel about it. Along with the book, I made drawings of the people who appear in Onderland.

There’s a land that only reveals itself to people who know what abuse is. Here, monsters from the past live together with their prey. Nightmares roam freely through this strange realm where nothing remains hidden. One day Harper also ends up in Onderland, where everyone has found a way to survive. Harper has no idea yet how to approach that. As her body and her mind split further and further apart, she can no longer deny her own past.&#60;img width="3080" height="2128" width_o="3080" height_o="2128" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a76eaa8196a4e22fcb8a6087d30548f40313df551fa9afdaa574074bb6ae1446/scapyland-montage.jpg" data-mid="209735905" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a76eaa8196a4e22fcb8a6087d30548f40313df551fa9afdaa574074bb6ae1446/scapyland-montage.jpg" /&#62;

Excerpt Onderland

No one can convince me to leave. I’m staying.

We call it underland. There is no fixed shape, the area changes with the mood of its residents. This place opened up to me the moment I saw myself disappear. Or rather, I saw the coherence disappear. This happens very slowly at first, so slowly that doubt arises as to whether it is happening at all, and then suddenly becomes fast and inescapable. My head and my body no longer spoke to each other.

It happened on a Tuesday evening. The eyes of the boy crawling on top of me were too close together. While I was locked up in this old memory for the umpteenth time, I fell through the sheets, behind the springs of my mattress, through the foam rubber, along the legs of my bed, which were much longer than before. There seemed to be no end to the decline. It was dark. Until I realized that I had squeezed my eyes shut. I was afraid and excited at the same time.

I have found something that doesn’t exist anywhere else. Here we dare to look straight at the atrocities of the past, all monsters from former times live together with their prey, no one is afraid anymore of what has happened to us. The people who are broken, who build a new person from fragments, skin and blood, have gathered in a country that remains hidden from anyone who has not experienced the same. I found it at the time when I had nowhere else to go. Everything in underland is good, there is nothing and no one here that opposes me.

I'm here and I'm never leaving.

Ankie van Kasteren&#38;nbsp;

	Ankie van Kasteren (1996) is a visual artist, based in the Netherlands. She is primarily focusing on the medium photography, but also shifting between collage, moving image, painting, sculpture and installation art.

 Her personal experiences and memories serve as the main source of inspiration for her creations.

︎︎︎Ankie’s website
‘’What I love about our collective is how diverse it is in composition. As a neurodivergent artist and probably the youngest member of our collective, I feel very much seen and heard. It’s not only the art works that get better, I also grow as a person and feel supported in the challenges I face along the way.’’

When Ankie was eleven, she met photographer Y*, a family friend who groomed and sexually abused her. The project tells her experiences in both words and images. It shows the sexualization of young girls and the secretive dynamic between groomer and victim.
Photographer Y* would start calling her 'his sweet little baby bird'.
The project confronts the audience with the tension between not wanting to know about it and being curious about it at the same time. It encourages you to recognize the ways in which we unconsciously seek out or avoid certain realities.

‘’SAAC is a very safe place for artists who have been sexually abused under the age of 18. It feels great to be together, without having to explain anything. Little has to be said aloud, we understand each other, and naturally support each other.’’

Faces of Rape: Faces of Rape are paintings of women who had
been raped and shared their story in the media. The first one she found in the
newspaper, a woman from Pakistan, she had been gangraped and was so brave to
speak up and write a book about it. Having experienced rape herself and knowing
how hard it is to talk about it, FBVG admired her, and decided to paint her,
also to make the subject more discussable.

Many more paintings followed, in January 2020 there were 38,
and they were on show in Loods 6 in Amsterdam. FBVG made a catalog of all the
paintings and the stories of the women, in Dutch and English.

In that year she also started to paint men in this series.
Since she joined SAAC, she has been portraying members of the group. There are
52 Faces of Rape now, the last 9 are also Faces of SAAC. There are more to come.

In 2012 FBVG made a painting about a monument for the sexually abused. It showed the part of the body that had been stolen from her. In 2021, joining SAAC, she mentioned it in the meetings and got enthusiastic reactions. Everybody liked the idea of a monument. She made the same painting again, but in a different style, and went to ceramics class to turn the 2D image into a 3D monument. She made 3 big proposals, and 13 small ones, which are the children’s monuments. The big ones are supposed to be so high that one can easily walk under it, and look up to the damaged parts. The big red one has 2 round holes on top, so there can be daylight in the monument. It also has 2 doors, so people can enter and scratch their own story in the walls.

Now a bigger monument has been made, with these same features, 81 cm of height, with support of the AFK (Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst). The idea is that this monument will be 7 meters high in the future, standing outside somewhere, in a city, near green surroundings. Maybe Amsterdam Noord has such a place. And wouldn’t it be great if every city has such a monument? There are so many people who have been sexually abused, wouldn’t it be comforting to have such a place to visit whenever you want?

The group came up with the idea to make many small ones, sell them to people who have been abused, let them place it where it’s meaningful, photograph it, and upload the picture to the SAAC website. So a worldwide map of people who have been abused (under 18) might be created. FBVG is realising this plan. For this purpose, a mold has been made from one of the small monuments, and this one has been multiplied many times. These small monuments are called “The Kids Monument”, and they are for sale in the museum shop of Het Nieuwe Domein, for 75 euro, during the SAAC exhibition “I Think U Did Something To Me And Now It’s In Everything I See And Do”, from 18 February - 18 May 2025. Frederique Pisuisse

	Artist and DJ Frederique Pisuisse (she/they) questions conventional understandings of the body and the mind and consciousness-expanding practices such as psychedelics and meditation through film, poetry and music. Their work follows a dissociative logic that explores its creative potential, and gives voice to the experience of otherness and how to live with this.︎︎︎Frederique’s website

‘’I recently joined SAAC and it has been such an emotional pleasure to talk to the group, feel the urgency of what we have to say, and talk about how to say this best.’’

I’m Just Lying There (2022) is a ficto-memoir about a relationship between a young teenage girl and a 36 year old man. Through poems and pop songs, the film brings back memories of their weirdly grown-up dates. Having dinner at a restaurant for the first time without parents, and being picked up in his Mercedes to get high together.
The coming-of-age film looks at the shaping experiences in which the female body is first subjected to the male gaze, becoming an object of desire. The protagonist, who is 13 years old at the time of their relationship, is pulled towards the sensual experiences of being with this man, and simultaneously feels the danger in these experiences. There is a sense of dissolution of the self. She uses her intellect to separate and watch over the body she owns, a detachment strategy, whereby the scene appears to the viewer in birds-eye-view. Time is warped and the body is stretched, creating a body-mind separation experienced while watching.
I'm Just Lying There is distributed, preserved and archived by LI-MA and was shown at Rewire Festival at iii in Amare the Hague, West den Haag, Set Project Space London, WYSIWYG Cinema the Hague, Lab111 Amsterdam, Spielraum at De School Amsterdam and at LungA Festival in Iceland, Het Einde De School Amsterdam.

Tripsitter (2020) is a personal journey through various consciousness-expanding moments experienced during and after a traumatic trip with the hallucinatory drug DMT. Guided by an extensive poem, the viewer is taken through a scale model of a nondescript building and parking lot, personifying the dark corners of the human mind. While the camera wanders through the model, you see shadows glide over the tranquil landscape, the rhythm of the four seasons while ravens drift in the sky.

Through Ayahuasca ceremonies, meditation retreats, panic attacks and Out of Body Experiences, the diary-like text gives the viewer insight into the recovery process after the development of a derealization disorder of the artist. Derealization is a dissociative disorder in which people get the feeling that the world is not real, and through which the outside world looks like a movie or a film set.

Tripsitter was produced for Gh0stSpace London and shown at International Film Festival Rotterdam, Video Art Festival Turku in Finland, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Roffa Mon Amour Film Festival Rotterdam, Pinkman Records Acid Surfers Day Festival Rotterdam, Home Cinema at Reneenee Amsterdam and Lemoyne Gallery Zurich. The film is distributed by LI-MA and was taken into their archive for research and preservation.

Sanna Martha (1979) lives and works in Utrecht as a visual artist and dialogic worker in mental health care. She studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts. She exhibited her work at Beeldend Gesproken, among other places.

Martha moves in different worlds and therefore quickly switches between different contexts and roles. Polyphony, co-production and allowing uncertainty are nourishing basic principles for her that are embodied in the artworks.

Martha uses different techniques and works with a wide variety of materials. For this exhibition she worked with analogue printing techniques in combination with glass and textiles.
‘‘The collective provides support and encouragement to artistically unpack what has been shielded and suppressed for the sake of others.’’

I-Thou(2023-2025)

I-Thou is inspired by the concept of the I-Thou relationship by the philosopher Martin Buber: ‘the healing principle of meeting another being as he is, rather than what he represents’.
I-Thou is a photography project with horses in shelters.

Horses are particularly sensitive animals and pierce straight into the soul. The alignment between feeling, thinking and acting is the basic condition for connection with a horse; being able to purely show up as you are in the moment in relationship to the other.

Mara’s Pet(2024)

Mara’s Pet is about re-establishing an inner dialogue after a state of fragmentation in which thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations or memories are (temporarily) interrupted or disconnected from consciousness (dissociation).

For the textile work Martha used a resist technique in combination with indigo. Indigo is a dye with a rich history and was given the predicate of gift of the gods or devil's colour due to its attributed magical power. The trade in indigo has inspired people to religious thinking and ritual activities, but also led to power and exploitation.

Vertical Polyphony refers to all the voices that are present within us. The work is inspired by prayer rolls; the Bogolan from Mali and the Ketab from ancient Ethiopia. The rolls served as a talisman and were provided with traditional texts, symbols and images to ward off illness of the person for whom the roll was made. They were also used to strengthen or support important moments in people's lives.

 The Self is about the value of getting lost while initiating a conversation with a still part within oneself that transcends the personal.
